Don’t you agree with me that when you add lace to a garment, that becomes the star of the show? I just love lace, it’s so elegant and always finds a way to be current.
Imitating nature
Lace can be such a powerful tool, when used correctly. By adding just a bit of lace to a very plain and simple garment, you can transform the entire outfit to portray a completely different feeling. From stoic and modern to romantic and elegant. Coco Chanel once said: “I consider lace to be one of the prettiest imitations ever made of the fantasy of nature.” The intricate patterns you find in different lace designs are truly a work of art.
When your test garment makes it to the stage
We made this emerald leotard to test the base of the tutu pattern that we wanted to make and in the end it came out so nicely, that it made it to stage. Originally a male dancer was cast for the “Tree” character, but due to Covid19 the show was postponed with 16 months. Unfortunately a lot of the cast members changed and the studio ended up casting a female dancer for this part, but luckily we remembered that we had already made this green leotard and it was just collecting dust.

Working with what you have
We found the most beautiful emerald lace that matched the emerald leotard perfectly, but the big challenge here, was that we could only find 1m of this lace fabric. We wanted to highlight the organic nature of the tree and the flower design in the lace, so we decided to make the lace the star of the outfit. We’ve cut a full-circle skirt and with the off-cut pieces, we’ve added sleeves. To emphasize the V-shaped stylelines of the front panel, we’ve also added some lace there. To finish the look, we’ve embellished it with golden sequences.
