Relate to your audience
Initially the male dancer, who was portraying the abusive partner in a romantic relationship, was going to wear an all black outfit, to emphasize the evil side of an abusive relationship. But fortunately, as life has it, a relationship is not always just bad. Through the choreography, you can see the back and forth struggles of the relationship, portraying moments of love and tenderness, and on the other hand hurt and loneliness. We wanted to showcase that through the costumes as well and make it more relatable to the audience.

The design
To make the male dancer look more like an everyday Joe, we’ve decided to make some kind of shirt for the dancer. We decided to use the same vibrant purple colour lycra that we used for the female dancer, in order to emphasize the couple relationship between the two characters. Lycra is best suited to be form fitting and not really very flowy like regular cotton that is typical used for shirt, so . we decided make a short sleeved unitard with a black collar band to resemble a shirt. We also paired the shirt with a regular pair of black jazz pants to emphasize the everyday Joe look and to make it more relatable to the audience.
If you have not read our previous blog post where we explain the costume of the female dancer, please go and read “The pas de deux”.
